A little history
Ashby Castle — now a magnificent ruin — was the seat of the Hastings family. Mary Queen of Scots was held here in 1569. Walter Scott set key scenes of Ivanhoe at Ashby, describing the famous tournament held here — putting the town on the literary map.
The castle ruins are excellent and English Heritage managed. The town centre for good independent shopping. The National Forest is on the doorstep.
