Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales), the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway, the Welsh language heartland, and a small Gwynedd town of extraordinary lake and mountain setting
A little history
Bala is the commercial centre for a large area of Welsh-speaking Gwynedd. Llyn Tegid — Bala Lake — is the largest natural lake in Wales and feeds the River Dee. The town is one of the strongest Welsh-language communities in Wales. Thomas Charles, who helped found the British and Foreign Bible Society, was minister here.
The Bala Lake Railway along the southern shore of the lake is a delight. Kayaking and watersports on the lake. The town centre for authentic Welsh-speaking community life. The surrounding hills for walking.
