Known for
Duff House (a William Adam masterpiece, one of Scotland's finest country houses), the former county town of Banffshire, the Deveron estuary, and a Moray Firth coastal town of outstanding Georgian architecture
A little history
Banff was the county town of Banffshire and a major port. Duff House, designed by William Adam and completed in 1741, is one of the finest baroque country houses in Scotland — now a gallery in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
Duff House is genuinely extraordinary — a baroque palace on the edge of a small Scottish town, housing Scottish National Gallery paintings. Free to Historic Environment Scotland members. The town's Georgian architecture is excellent.
