Known for
The first street tram in Britain (1860), Birkenhead Park (the model for New York's Central Park), Hamilton Square (one of Britain's finest Georgian squares), and a Merseyside town that gave the world urban green space
A little history
Birkenhead Park, designed by Joseph Paxton and opened in 1847, was the first publicly funded civic park in the world — Frederick Law Olmsted visited in 1850 and used it as the direct model for Central Park in New York. Hamilton Square, built between 1825 and 1847, is one of the finest squares outside London.
Birkenhead Park is genuinely magnificent and free — walk it and understand how it became Central Park. Hamilton Square for the architecture. The Mersey Ferry from Woodside for the Liverpool skyline. The Market for local food.
