Known for
The Ffestiniog Railway (the world's oldest surviving steam narrow-gauge railway), the slate caverns (Llechwedd, one of Wales's great visitor attractions), the slate mining heritage (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and a Welsh-speaking mountain town of extraordinary industrial and natural drama
A little history
Blaenau Ffestiniog was the capital of the Welsh slate industry — at its peak producing a third of the world's roofing slate. The Ffestiniog Railway, opened in 1836, carried slate down from the mountains to Porthmadog. The slate landscape was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. The town has the highest rainfall in Wales.
Llechwedd Slate Caverns is one of Wales's great visitor experiences — the underground tours are extraordinary. The Ffestiniog Railway to Porthmadog is one of the world's great railway journeys. The slate landscape walks above the town are dramatic and unusual.
