The Blaydon Races were real horse races held on Blaydon Island in the Tyne from 1861. Geordie Ridley wrote the song in 1862 for the opening night of Balmbra's Music Hall in Newcastle — it became the unofficial anthem of the North East. The races themselves ended in 1916.
