Explore Bridport
Known for
The rope and net making heritage (Bridport twine was used in English gallows, giving rise to 'the Bridport dagger'), the Saturday market, the arts scene, West Bay and the Jurassic Coast, and a West Dorset market town beloved by artists and food lovers
A little history
Bridport has been making rope and nets since the 13th century — the town's wide pavements were originally rope walks where hemp was twisted into rope. 'The Bridport dagger' was a euphemism for the hangman's noose. The town's arts scene has been growing since the 1970s when artists and alternative communities settled here.
The Saturday market in the wide streets is one of Dorset's finest. West Bay — just 2 miles south — is the Jurassic Coast at its most dramatic (and the setting for Broadchurch). The Electric Palace cinema is excellent. The independent food scene on the high street is outstanding.
