A little history
Brighouse grew as a textile manufacturing town on the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal. The Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, founded in 1881, became world famous when their recording of The Floral Dance reached number two in the UK charts in 1977 — kept off the top only by Wings. The band remains one of the world's great brass bands.
The Smith Art Gallery is free and has a surprisingly good collection. The Calder Valley walking and cycling routes from Brighouse are excellent. Saturday market for local Yorkshire produce. The Brighouse and Rastrick Band perform locally — check their schedule.
