Known for
Buckfast Abbey (the remarkable monastery rebuilt by monks and famous for Buckfast Tonic Wine), the South Devon Railway (steam trains to Totnes), the Dart Valley, and a small Devon town of spiritual and railway significance
A little history
Buckfast Abbey was founded in the 11th century, dissolved by Henry VIII, and then remarkably rebuilt by a small community of Benedictine monks between 1906 and 1938 using their own hands. The monks also produce Buckfast Tonic Wine — one of Britain's most notorious beverages, beloved and reviled in equal measure.
Buckfast Abbey is genuinely beautiful and the monks' story extraordinary — free to visit. The South Devon Railway steam trains to Totnes along the Dart are excellent. The Dart Valley walking and cycling. Try the Buckfast Tonic Wine from the abbey shop — make your own mind up.
