Explore Bury St Edmunds
Known for
The Abbey Gardens (ruins of one of the most powerful monasteries in medieval England), the Greene King brewery, the Cathedral, the Magna Carta connection (barons met here in 1214), and one of England's finest Georgian market towns
A little history
The great Abbey of St Edmundsbury was one of the wealthiest in England before its dissolution. In November 1214, the barons of England met in the abbey church and swore on the altar to force King John to sign what became Magna Carta. Greene King has brewed here since 1799.
The Abbey Gardens are free and beautiful — the ruins are extraordinary. The Greene King Brewery tap for excellent local ales. The Arc shopping centre for modern retail. Angel Hill for the perfect Suffolk market town square. The Saturday market.
