Explore Buxton
Known for
The natural mineral spring water (Buxton water), the Crescent (a magnificent Georgian spa building now restored as a hotel and thermal baths), the Opera House, the Peak District gateway, and England's highest market town
A little history
Buxton was developed as a spa town by the Duke of Devonshire from the 1780s — the Crescent was built to rival Bath. The natural warm spring water has been drunk since Roman times. The Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and Buxton Festival make it one of England's great small arts towns.
The Crescent is now restored as a hotel and thermal baths — the thermal experience is excellent. The Opera House for top-quality productions. Poole's Cavern for the limestone cave. The Monsal Trail cycling from Buxton.
