Known for
The Cathedral, the Festival Theatre (one of England's finest regional theatres), the Roman street plan (the four main streets follow Roman lines), Fishbourne Roman Palace, and a West Sussex city of exceptional beauty and cultural richness
A little history
Chichester's four main streets follow the Roman grid of Noviomagus Reginorum exactly — the cross at the centre has been a meeting point for 2,000 years. The Cathedral, begun in 1076, is one of England's finest. The Festival Theatre, opened in 1962, regularly transfers productions to the West End. Fishbourne Roman Palace, just outside the city, is the largest Roman residence north of the Alps.
The Cathedral Close is beautiful — free to walk and rarely crowded. Fishbourne Roman Palace is extraordinary — the mosaics are outstanding. The Festival Theatre for world-class productions. The city walls walk for the full Roman circuit.
