Explore Chippenham
Known for
The Saxon heritage (Alfred the Great's stepmother was a queen of Chippenham), the Monkton Park riverside walks, Lacock (the most filmed village in England, nearby), and a Wiltshire market town at the heart of stone circle country
A little history
Chippenham was an important Saxon royal centre — Ethelswitha, Alfred the Great's sister, was Queen of Chippenham. The Danish invasion of 878 began with a surprise attack here. The town grew as a coaching stop on the Bath Road. Lacock village — just 3 miles away — is so perfectly preserved it's used constantly for film and TV.
Lacock is extraordinary — the entire village is National Trust, and it's been used for Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey, Cranford and Harry Potter. Avebury stone circle is 12 miles. Monkton Park riverside walks for the town.
