Known for
The Priory (the longest parish church in England), the harbour where the Avon and Stour meet, Mudeford Quay, the New Forest and Purbeck within reach, and a Dorset coastal town of extraordinary natural beauty and heritage
A little history
Christchurch Priory, at 311 feet the longest parish church in England, contains an extraordinary miracle beam — a beam that builders left behind but found miraculously extended and fitted perfectly the next morning, attributed to Christ himself joining the building work. The harbour, where the rivers Avon and Stour meet the sea, has been a settlement since the Iron Age.
The Priory is extraordinary and free — the miracle beam story and the medieval stonework are exceptional. Mudeford Quay for the beach huts and fresh crab sandwiches — some of the most expensive beach huts in England are here. The harbour for kayaking.
