Known for
The National Forest (Coalville is at the heart of England's newest forest), the Snibston Discovery Museum site, the coal mining heritage, and a Leicestershire town being transformed by the National Forest
A little history
Coalville grew rapidly as a coal mining centre from the 1820s. The Snibston Colliery, which closed in 2015 after the museum was shut controversially by the county council, was the last working colliery site in Leicestershire. The National Forest — 200 square miles of new woodland — is being planted across the area.
The National Forest is genuinely transformative — millions of trees planted where coal mines once stood. Beacon Hill Country Park for excellent walking and the views across the National Forest. Bradgate Park nearby is Leicestershire's finest country park.
