Known for
Conisbrough Castle (the finest circular Norman keep in England, the inspiration for Ivanhoe), the Don Valley, and a South Yorkshire town with a remarkable Norman fortress at its heart
A little history
Conisbrough Castle — built by Hamelin Plantagenet in the 1180s — has the finest circular Norman keep in England. Walter Scott used the castle as the setting for Ivanhoe (1819), making it one of the inspirations for the medieval romance. The castle now stands magnificently above the Don Valley.
The castle is extraordinary — one of England's great Norman fortresses and surprisingly little-visited. The circular keep interior is fascinating. The Don Valley walk below the castle. The town is unpretentious and genuinely proud of its heritage.
