Explore Corby
Known for
Little Scotland (the largest Scottish community in England outside Scotland, brought by Stewarts & Lloyds steelworks), the Corby Games (a version of the Highland Games), the steel heritage, and a Northamptonshire new town with a fierce Scottish identity
A little history
Corby was a small village until Stewarts & Lloyds opened a steel tube works in 1934, bringing thousands of Scottish workers — primarily from Lanarkshire. The town grew rapidly into a new town. The Scottish community remains so strong that the town holds its own Highland Games and has a piper at every civic event.
The Corby Highland Games in July are genuinely excellent — caber tossing and pipe bands in Northamptonshire. The Corby Cube arts centre for events. The town's Scottish food culture — haggis, bridies and square sausage — in local shops.
