Known for
Corsham Court (a magnificent Elizabethan mansion with outstanding art collection), the Box Tunnel (Brunel's Great Western Railway masterpiece), the underground nuclear bunker (BURLINGTON), and a beautiful Wiltshire stone town of great architectural quality
A little history
Corsham Court has been home to the Methuen family since 1745 — their collection of Old Masters rivals many national museums. Box Tunnel, designed by Brunel at exactly the right angle for the sun to shine through on his birthday, was the longest railway tunnel in the world when built in 1841. BURLINGTON — the secret nuclear bunker built beneath the town — is now open for tours.
Corsham Court is genuinely extraordinary — the art collection rivals small national museums. The BURLINGTON bunker tours are genuinely fascinating Cold War history. The High Street is beautiful Corsham stone. Box Tunnel for Brunel's engineering genius.
