Explore Dartmouth
Known for
The Britannia Royal Naval College (training ground for generations of naval officers), the castle, the Higher and Lower ferries, the Dart estuary, and a South Devon port town of extraordinary beauty and naval heritage
A little history
Dartmouth Castle, built in 1388, was one of the first castles purpose-built for artillery. The Britannia Royal Naval College, perched dramatically above the town, has trained naval officers since 1905 — including King Charles III. The town is accessible only by water or narrow roads, preserving its character.
The Higher Ferry crossing gives the best view of the Naval College and the town. The castle is excellent. Dartmouth Food Festival in October is one of the South West's finest. The Dart River trips. Arrive by steam train from Paignton.
