Known for
Dumbarton Castle (on a volcanic rock, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Strathclyde), the birthplace of William Wallace (disputed but claimed), the Leven estuary, and a West Dunbartonshire town of extraordinary ancient heritage
A little history
Dumbarton Rock has been fortified since the 5th century — it was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde and one of the most important strongholds in early medieval Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots spent time here as a child before sailing to France. The castle on the twin-peaked volcanic rock is one of Scotland's most dramatically sited.
Dumbarton Castle is extraordinary — the twin-peaked volcanic plug is unique in Scotland and the views over the Clyde are outstanding. The Denny Ship Tank (the world's oldest surviving ship model testing tank) is a remarkable museum. The Leven estuary walks.
