A little history
Dunfermline was the capital of Scotland in the 11th and 12th centuries — Malcolm Canmore and Margaret (later Saint Margaret) held court here. Robert the Bruce is buried in Dunfermline Abbey — though his heart was taken to Melrose. Andrew Carnegie, the steel magnate and philanthropist, was born in a cottage here in 1835.
Dunfermline Abbey is free and magnificent — the nave is extraordinary. Pittencrieff Park (the Glen), gifted to the town by Carnegie, is beautiful. The Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum is genuinely moving. The town centre for local Fife shopping.
