Known for
The Canadian Burns Unit (where pioneering plastic surgery was performed on RAF pilots in WWII), Sackville College (a stunning Jacobean almshouse), the High Street (one of England's finest medieval commercial streets), and a West Sussex market town of real historical significance
A little history
The Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead was where Archibald McIndoe pioneered plastic surgery techniques on burned RAF pilots during WWII — the Guinea Pig Club, the fraternity of airmen he treated, was formed here. Sackville College, built in 1609, is one of England's finest Jacobean almshouses. The High Street has extraordinary medieval and Tudor buildings.
Sackville College is beautiful and open to visitors. The High Street is genuinely outstanding — medieval Wealden Hall houses at street level. The Guinea Pig Club story is told at the hospital. Standen House (NTS) for Arts and Crafts beauty nearby.
