Known for
Elgin Cathedral (the Lantern of the North, one of Scotland's greatest ruined cathedrals), the Speyside whisky trail, Moray's commercial capital, and a small Scottish city of extraordinary medieval heritage
A little history
Elgin Cathedral, founded in 1224, was one of the finest cathedrals in Scotland — its Chapter House was rated one of Europe's greatest. In 1390 the Wolf of Badenoch burned it in revenge for excommunication. The magnificent ruin is now one of Scotland's most beautiful. The town is the capital of Moray and gateway to Speyside whisky country.
Elgin Cathedral is free and extraordinary — the octagonal Chapter House is outstanding. The Speyside Cooperage for whisky barrel making. Pluscarden Abbey (the only working medieval monastery in Scotland) is a short drive. The town centre market.
