Explore Eltham
Known for
Eltham Palace (the extraordinary Art Deco mansion built inside a medieval palace), Well Hall Pleasaunce, the Bob Hope connection (the comedian was born here), and a South East London suburb with a royal medieval core
A little history
Eltham Palace was a royal residence from the 14th century — Edward IV built the magnificent Great Hall in 1479. In the 1930s, Stephen and Virginia Courtauld built an extraordinary Art Deco mansion inside the medieval shell. Bob Hope was born in Eltham in 1903, spending his early years here before emigrating to America.
Eltham Palace is genuinely extraordinary — the 1930s Art Deco interiors alongside the medieval Great Hall are unlike anything else in England. English Heritage managed and excellent. Well Hall Pleasaunce for gardens. Bob Hope's birthplace is marked.
