Explore Fishguard
Known for
The last invasion of Britain (1797, French forces surrendered at Fishguard after meeting armed local women), the ferry to Ireland (Rosslare), the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and a small Welsh fishing town of remarkable historical and natural significance
A little history
Fishguard was the site of the Last Invasion of Britain in February 1797 — a French force of 1,400 men landed at nearby Carreg Wastad Point but surrendered within days, partly after the legend that local Welsh women in traditional costume were mistaken for soldiers. A tapestry commemorating the invasion (like the Bayeux Tapestry) is displayed in the town.
The Last Invasion Tapestry at the town hall is genuinely fascinating — the detail is extraordinary. The ferry to Rosslare for the Ireland crossing. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Fishguard is stunning. Lower Town harbour for the traditional fishing village atmosphere.
