Known for
The ferry port to Netherlands and Denmark, the Electric Palace Cinema (Britain's oldest surviving purpose-built cinema), the Mayflower connections (the Pilgrim Fathers' ship was built here), and a preserved Georgian port town of remarkable character
A little history
Harwich's Electric Palace Cinema (1911) is the oldest surviving purpose-built cinema in Britain. The Mayflower, which carried the Pilgrim Fathers to America, was built and partially crewed from Harwich. The Georgian town plan of the old port is preserved.
The Electric Palace Cinema is extraordinary — still showing films in a perfectly preserved 1911 building. The Ha'penny Pier for harbour views. The Treadwheel Crane in the yard.
