Explore Helensburgh
Known for
Hill House (Charles Rennie Mackintosh's greatest domestic building, NTS), the birthplace of John Logie Baird (inventor of television), the Clyde estuary waterfront, and a handsome Clyde resort town of extraordinary creative heritage
A little history
Helensburgh has produced two of the 20th century's greatest inventors. Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed Hill House in 1902 — it is considered his masterpiece of domestic architecture. John Logie Baird, inventor of television, was born here in 1888. The Victorian grid of streets on the hillside above the Clyde is one of Scotland's most handsome planned towns.
Hill House is genuinely extraordinary — Mackintosh's masterpiece recently opened after conservation work. The waterfront promenade for Clyde estuary views. The town centre for independent shops. The Logie Baird connection is celebrated throughout.
