Hertford Castle — the Norman motte and bailey with a surviving medieval gatehouse — was used as a royal palace by Henry III and Edward I. The town is the county town of Hertfordshire. The confluence of the Rivers Lea and Beane gives Hertford its name and its lovely riverside walks.
