A little history
Hexham Abbey was founded by St Wilfrid in 674 AD on the site of a Roman building. The Saxon crypt beneath the current church is one of the finest surviving pieces of 7th century architecture in England. Hadrian's Wall runs just 3 miles north of the town.
The Abbey crypt is extraordinary — genuine 7th century Saxon stonework. The Tuesday market is one of Northumberland's finest. Corbridge Roman town is a short drive. The Wall at Chesters Fort and Housesteads from here.
