Explore Ilfracombe
Known for
Damien Hirst's 'Verity' (the enormous bronze statue on the harbour), the Victorian promenade, the harbour and tunnels beaches, and a North Devon resort with an extraordinary contemporary art installation
A little history
Ilfracombe's harbour has been used since medieval times. Damien Hirst, who lives locally, commissioned 'Verity' — a 20-metre bronze of a pregnant woman holding a sword, standing on a pile of books and legal texts — for the harbour in 2012. The Victorian promenade and the tunnels beaches (hand-carved through cliff) are distinctive.
Verity in the harbour is genuinely extraordinary — Hirst's most visible public work. The Tunnels Beaches are remarkable — hand-carved Victorian tunnels through the cliff to sheltered pools. The promenade for Victorian seaside architecture.
