Explore Kenilworth
Known for
Kenilworth Castle (one of England's greatest ruined fortresses, where Elizabeth I was entertained in 1575), the Abbey Fields, and a Warwickshire market town of fine medieval heritage
A little history
Kenilworth Castle — begun by Geoffrey de Clinton in 1122 — was one of the most powerful fortresses in England. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, spent £60,000 entertaining Elizabeth I here in 1575 in nineteen days of festivities. Sir Walter Scott's novel Kenilworth immortalised this royal visit. The castle is now magnificently preserved as a ruin.
Kenilworth Castle is extraordinary — the Great Hall ruins and the Elizabethan garden recreation are outstanding. Abbey Fields for the remains of the Augustinian abbey. The town centre for good independent shops.
