Explore Lanark
Known for
New Lanark (UNESCO World Heritage Site, the model mill village of social reformer Robert Owen), the Clyde Valley orchards, the Falls of Clyde, and a South Lanarkshire market town of extraordinary heritage significance
A little history
New Lanark, built by David Dale and transformed by Robert Owen between 1800 and 1825, was one of the world's first model industrial communities — providing workers with housing, schools and shops in a vision of industrial utopia. UNESCO recognition places it alongside the Taj Mahal.
New Lanark is extraordinary and free to walk around — the workers' cottages, the institute and the Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve make it a full day. The Clyde Valley in autumn for the orchard harvest.
