Known for
The Cathedral (the only medieval cathedral in England with three spires), Samuel Johnson's birthplace, the Lichfield Gospels, the Bower Day civic festival, and a Staffordshire cathedral city of great historic significance
A little history
Lichfield Cathedral — the only medieval English cathedral with three spires — has dominated the city since the 13th century. Dr Samuel Johnson, the dictionary-maker and father of modern English literature, was born here in 1709. The city was an important royalist centre in the Civil War.
The Cathedral is magnificent and free. The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum is excellent. The market square for independent food. The Bower Day in May for civic pageantry.
