Explore Lincoln
Known for
Lincoln Cathedral (the finest Gothic building in England according to John Ruskin), Lincoln Castle (with one of four surviving Magna Carta copies), the Bailgate medieval quarter, and a hilltop city of extraordinary beauty
A little history
Lincoln Cathedral — begun in 1088 — was the tallest building in the world for over two centuries. Lincoln Castle holds one of only four surviving original copies of Magna Carta (1215). The Roman Ermine Street still forms the city's spine. The Bailgate medieval quarter, at the top of the famous Steep Hill, is one of England's finest historic environments.
Steep Hill is genuinely extraordinary — the independent shops, galleries and cafes winding up to the cathedral are outstanding. The Cathedral is free and magnificent. The Magna Carta copy in the Castle is remarkable. The Christmas Market in December.
