The Longton area of the Fylde, the Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (one of England's finest WWT centres), and a small Lancashire village near one of England's best wildfowl reserves
A little history
Longton is a small Lancashire village on the Fylde coast plain. The WWT Martin Mere centre, just outside the village, is one of the most important wildfowl and wetlands centres in England — famous for its wintering whooper swans and pink-footed geese which arrive in their thousands each autumn.
Martin Mere WWT is genuinely outstanding — the pink-footed geese coming in at dusk in autumn is one of England's great wildlife spectacles. The Ribble Estuary for additional coastal birdwatching. The village has local character.
