Explore Lowestoft
Known for
The most easterly point in Britain, the birthplace of Benjamin Britten, the fishing heritage, the Claremont Pier, and a Suffolk coastal town where the sun rises first in England
A little history
Lowestoft is the most easterly town in Britain — the sun rises here before anywhere else in England. Benjamin Britten, who went on to found the Aldeburgh Festival, was born here in 1913. The town was a major herring fishing port — the Scottish herring fleet would winter here. The Claremont Pier opened in 1903.
The most easterly point sunrise is genuinely special — worth getting up for. The Britten birthplace connection. The Maritime Museum for the fishing heritage. The beach is good. Oulton Broad for the Broads access.
