Explore Malmesbury
Known for
The Malmesbury Abbey (Wiltshire's finest Norman abbey), Elmer the Flying Monk (an 11th century monk who attached wings and jumped from the abbey), the Market Cross, and the oldest borough in England
A little history
Malmesbury claims to be England's oldest borough, having been granted its charter in 924 AD by King Athelstan. In around 1010, Brother Elmer attached homemade wings and jumped from the abbey tower, gliding 200 metres before breaking his legs — one of the earliest recorded attempts at human flight. The Market Cross is one of England's finest.
The Abbey is magnificent and free. The Market Cross is exquisite. The Athelstan Museum for the oldest borough story. The River Avon walks around the town. The Abbey House Gardens for spectacular spring bulbs.
