Explore Marlborough
Known for
The widest High Street in England, Marlborough College (one of England's great public schools, whose alumni include Kate Middleton), Savernake Forest (a royal hunting forest since the Norman Conquest), and a Wiltshire market town of extraordinary beauty
A little history
Marlborough's High Street — one of the widest in England, with arcaded buildings along one side — was laid out after the great fire of 1653. Marlborough College occupies the site of a mound that may have been Merlin's burial place. Savernake Forest, the only privately owned forest in England, surrounds the town with ancient woodland.
The High Street is genuinely magnificent — the arcades and the scale are extraordinary. Savernake Forest for walks among ancient oak and beech. The Wednesday and Saturday markets. The college mound for the Merlin legend.
