Explore Masham
Known for
The two breweries (Theakston's and Black Sheep — both making exceptional Yorkshire ales), the large market square, the Dales setting, and a tiny North Yorkshire market town of global ale significance
A little history
Masham has two of England's most celebrated breweries: Theakston's (founded 1827, makers of Old Peculier) and Black Sheep (founded 1992 when Paul Theakston left the family firm). The Black Sheep name is Paul Theakston's self-deprecating joke. The town's large market square reflects its former importance as a cattle market.
The Theakston's brewery tour is excellent — Old Peculier in the town is unmissable. The Black Sheep brewery tour equally good. The market square is one of the Dales' finest. The Swinton Estate walks.
