Explore Merthyr Tydfil
Known for
The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution's iron age (more iron was produced here than anywhere in the world in the early 19th century), Cyfarthfa Castle, the Merthyr Rising of 1831, and a Welsh valleys town of global industrial significance
A little history
Merthyr Tydfil was once the iron capital of the world — Cyfarthfa, Dowlais, Plymouth and Penydarren ironworks made the town the most important industrial centre on earth in the early 19th century. The world's first steam railway journey on rails ran from Merthyr in 1804. The Merthyr Rising of 1831 — a workers' uprising — raised the Red Flag for the first time.
Cyfarthfa Castle and Museum (free) is excellent — the story of the iron age is extraordinary. The Brecon Beacons are immediately accessible. The Trevithick trail for the first railway journey.
