Explore Monmouth
Known for
The birthplace of King Henry V, the medieval Monnow Bridge and Gate (the only fortified medieval bridge gateway remaining in Britain), and a Monmouthshire market town of exceptional medieval heritage
A little history
King Henry V — the hero of Agincourt — was born at Monmouth Castle in 1387. The Monnow Bridge with its fortified gate tower, built in 1272, is the only remaining bridge gateway in Britain of its kind. The town is at the gateway to the Wye Valley AONB.
The Monnow Gate is extraordinary — walk through a genuine medieval fortress gate still spanning the river. Monmouth Castle for Henry V's birthplace. The Wye Valley walking from the town. The market for local produce.
