Known for
The Northumbrian Pipes (Morpeth Chantry is the national centre for Northumbrian traditional music), the medieval clock tower, Emily Davison's birthplace, and the county town of Northumberland
A little history
Morpeth has been the county town of Northumberland since medieval times. The Chantry on the bridge houses the Northumbrian Craft Centre and the National Bagpipe Collection — the spiritual home of Northumbrian smallpipes. Emily Davison, the suffragette who threw herself under the King's horse at Epsom in 1913, was born here.
The Chantry Bagpipe Museum is genuinely fascinating — the Northumbrian smallpipes sound extraordinary. The medieval clock tower. The Wansbeck riverside walk. The Saturday market for local Northumberland produce.
