Explore Musselburgh
Known for
The oldest golf course in the world (the Musselburgh Links, first played in 1672), the Roman fort of Inveresk, the Honest Toun (the town's motto), and East Lothian's most historically rich town
A little history
Musselburgh Links Golf Course has continuous records of play from 1672 — the oldest in the world. Six Open Championships were held here. The town was a Roman fort settlement. The 'Honest Toun' motto comes from a compliment paid by General Monk's troops in 1650 — Musselburgh apparently refused to abandon Monk after other towns did.
The Musselburgh Links for the world's oldest golf course. The Roman fort earthworks at Inveresk. The River Esk walk. Pinkie House for the historic tower house. The town centre for local shopping.
