Explore Newport
Known for
The Chartist Uprising of 1839 (the last armed uprising in mainland Britain), the Transporter Bridge (one of only eight working transporter bridges in the world), the Celtic Manor Resort, and a Welsh city of industrial heritage and rapid regeneration
A little history
The Newport Rising of 3 November 1839 — when thousands of Chartists marched on Newport to demand political reform — was the last armed uprising on mainland Britain. The Transporter Bridge (1906) is one of only eight working transporter bridges in the world. The city has been regenerating rapidly and hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup.
The Transporter Bridge is genuinely extraordinary — take the gondola across. The Chartist Mural in the city centre. The Celtic Manor for the Ryder Cup heritage. The market for local Welsh produce.
