The birthplace of Robert Owen (the social reformer who pioneered cooperative movements), the Textile Museum, and the largest town in mid-Wales
A little history
Robert Owen — the social reformer, utopian socialist and father of the cooperative movement — was born in Newtown in 1771. His ideas on workers' welfare and cooperative business transformed 19th century capitalism. The town grew as a flannel weaving centre. It is the largest town in mid-Wales.
The Robert Owen Museum is excellent and tells the story of a genuinely world-changing thinker. The Textile Museum for the flannel heritage. The town centre market.
