Gawthorpe Hall, built between 1600 and 1605 for the Shuttleworth family and later modified by Charles Barry, is one of the finest Elizabethan mansions in Lancashire. It houses an extraordinary textile collection. The town grew as a cotton weaving centre in the 19th century.
