A little history
Penicuik is the main town for the northern Pentland Hills — one of the closest upland walking areas to Edinburgh. Penicuik House, the grand classical mansion, burned down in 1899 and remains a romantic ruin in beautiful parkland. The town grew as a paper-making centre on the North Esk.
