Explore Petworth
Known for
Petworth House (the National Trust's finest art collection outside London, including Turner's greatest landscapes), the antique shops (Petworth is one of England's finest antique centres), and a beautiful West Sussex town
A little history
Petworth House — one of the grandest late 17th century mansions in Britain — contains one of the National Trust's most important art collections, including Turner's paintings of the house and deer park. JMW Turner made Petworth his second home from 1809 to 1837. The town has one of the highest concentrations of antique dealers in England.
Petworth House is genuinely outstanding — the Turner collection is extraordinary. The deer park (free to walk) is magnificent. The antique shops are excellent. Shimmings Valley walk.
