Explore Romney Marsh
Known for
The RH&DR (Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway — the world's smallest public railway), the medieval churches (some of England's finest isolated Norman churches), Dungeness (the largest shingle beach in Europe with its lighthouses and nuclear power station), and one of England's most atmospheric and otherworldly landscapes
A little history
Romney Marsh was reclaimed from the sea during the Middle Ages. The landscape is extraordinary — flat, windswept and dotted with isolated medieval churches. Dungeness — a vast shingle headland — is one of the most alien landscapes in England. The RH&DR (1927) is one-third scale and runs 13 miles along the coast.
The RH&DR miniature railway is genuinely charming. Dungeness for the most extraordinary coastal landscape in England — the lighthouses, the fishermen's huts, Derek Jarman's garden. The isolated churches are outstanding.
