The Cathedral (England's finest spire), the original Magna Carta, Stonehenge nearby, the Tuesday and Saturday market and a cathedral city that's barely changed since the Middle Ages
A little history
Old Sarum was abandoned in 1220 and the new city built on the river plain — the Cathedral consecrated in 1258. The spire at 123 metres is the tallest in England. One of the four surviving copies of Magna Carta is in the Chapter House.
The market on Tuesday and Saturday is genuinely excellent — one of the oldest in England. The Cathedral Close is one of England's finest spaces. Ox Row and New Street for independent food.
